John Walsh. in: Developing the Digital Economy in ASEAN, Routledge, 2019.
Abstract: Research (e.g. Walsh, 2016) has shown that the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) has significant food insecurity problems. This occurs in urban and rural settings, as well as comparatively wealthy countries such as Thailand. Researchers also report that some local farmers have observed the emerging impacts of global climate change. Myanmar, for example, has seen an increase in the prevalence of drought events; an increase in the intensity and frequency of cyclones/strong winds; rainfall variability, including erratic and record-breaking intense rainfall events; an increase in the occurrence of flooding and storm surges; an increase in extreme high temperatures; and sea-level rise (Myanmar Climate Change Alliance, 2017).
